Reactions to Bad News by Susan
Today I received some very bad news. In fact, it's pretty horrible. My youngest sister is having surgery for colon cancer. She's 14 years younger than I am and it feels so wrong that this is happening to her.
I have always had a tendency to react to bad news with a lot of different and conflicting feelings. Tonight I'm feeling angry, sad, scared and mostly shocked. I fear that when the shock wears off, I will feel even more negative things.
So many of us react to bad news by asking why? Many of us react with a lot of tears and visible anger. Where are my tears? They never show up till much later. I've always heard that a good cry can help but I don't cry easily. My main reaction right now is shock and the numbness of disbelief.
Another reaction to bad news when it has to do with a family member is to want to be with the whole family. People often want to pray, hope and be together when something happens to one of it's members.
Depression will eventually creep in as one of my reactions to bad news. It always does.
