Big David.......by Susan
Big David is my brother. He's actually five years younger than I am but he is Big! David is 6' 4" tall. Our parents and sibblings started calling him Big David when my second son was born. I named my son David, after my brother. I dearly love my brother! These days, in my immediate family, we distinguish the two by calling my brother David and my son Dave.
My brother is a kind and loving person. He has suffered for many years with being bipolar. I'm very proud of the successes he has had in the past 7 years since he has been living near me. I'm also proud of the successes I've had with my depression since he has been living near me. We seem to be good for each other.
When Big David was about two years old, he fell out of the car our family was traveling in. In the fifties, there were no seat belts and no car seats for young children. He attempted to open the window and used the wrong handle. My dad had to stop the car on the side of the highway and run back to search for my little brother. He found him in the ditch along side of the road. We were so scared!
Daddy drove to the nearest town and hurried my brother into the hospital while the rest of us children waited in the car. (I think that was considered ok in those days) David had a head injury and a broken colarbone. It was an extremely tragic experience for him at such an early age.
As you can guess, it was also very upsetting to me, as well as his other sisters and his parents. I'm so grateful to this day to have my brother......my only brother. The best brother in the world!
